(Pierre) - Christina and Tom Yellow Boy of Mission stepped forward today to claim the $200,000 Powerball prize they won in the Saturday, April 11th drawing.
The couple, both teachers, discovered they’d won when Tom checked the Lottery’s website on Sunday morning. Convinced her husband was trying to fool her, Christina checked the numbers herself. “She started jumping up and down,” Tom said. “Her brother was there and he was jumping up and down, too.”
The winning ticket was sold at the Flying J in Rapid City. Earlier last week, Christina won a $4 Powerball prize and used it to buy four more tickets at the store. One of them turned out to be the $200,000 winner. The Flying J will receive a $10,000 bonus for selling the lucky “quick pick” ticket.
While their ticket missed winning the jackpot, it beat the 1:5,138,133 odds to win the game’s second prize for matching the five white ball numbers, but not the red Powerball number. The Yellow Boys are the third South Dakota winners of the prize this year.
The estimated jackpot for the next drawing on Wednesday, April 15 is $25 million. Powerball is played in 30 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1:195,249,054
