(PIERRE) - Guy and Kathy Marzenell of Aberdeen today claimed their $42,807 Dakota Cash jackpot for the July 18, 2009 drawing at the Pierre Lottery office.
The Marzenells purchased the Quick Pick ticket at M & H Gas in Aberdeen. The store will receive a bonus of $2,140 for selling the winning ticket. This is the fifth time this year the jackpot has been won in South Dakota's own lotto game.
While the couple are long-time players of both the lotto and instant scratch ticket games, the Dakota Cash jackpot is their largest win to date. Kathy was the first to realize they had matched all five numbers for the July 18 drawing after checking their tickets against the numbers listed in the Sunday newspaper. She immediately alerted her husband, who was outside working.
"I think I was a lot more excited than he was," Kathy said. "I told him to come in the house and he said 'In a minute'. So I yelled back that he better come in now!"
When he heard the news, Guy was happy he had heeded his wife's call and at first was numb to learn they had won. Guy, who owns a glass business, and Kathy, who works for a collection agency, already have plans for their winnings.
"We're going to re-side the house," said Guy. And Kathy added," And spend some money on the grandkids."
Now that they've won a large jackpot, will they keep trying their luck?
"We hope to be back here someday," Guy said with a smile. "For an even bigger win."
Dakota Cash is played only in South Dakota. The jackpot currently sits at $20,000 for the July 22 drawing. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1:324,632.
