(PIERRE) - Carol Gaikowski of Waubay today claimed her $283,864 Dakota Cash jackpot for the March 20, 2010 drawing at the Sioux Falls Lottery office.
Gaikowski purchased the Quick Pick ticket at Pike's Clark in Webster. The store will receive a bonus of $5,000 for selling the winning ticket. This is the second jackpot-winning ticket sold at Pike's Clark in just over a year. A ticket purchased there by Donald Kwasniewski on March 14, 2009 was a $378,068 Wild Card 2 jackpot winner.
Gaikowski, who is married and has five children, works for a home furnishings business in Webster. She usually purchases her Quick Picks at Pike's Clark and said this purchase was just like any other, except that this time, she won the jackpot.
"Usually when I buy gas there, I just tell them to put a couple lottery tickets on there, too. This time I got a lucky one, I guess," Gaikowski said.
She learned she was a jackpot winner Sunday afternoon when she went on-line to check her numbers. Although she saw that the numbers matched, Gaikowski called in her husband to make sure.
"I asked him if he saw the same numbers I did. I couldn't believe it that I'd won," she said. "I feel pretty fortunate, very lucky."
Even though the news of her win is still sinking in, Gaikowski has started making some preliminary plans on what to do with her winnings - part of the money will be used for home improvements. Now a confirmed jackpot winner, she says she'll continue to play the lottery.
"It's not a big investment to make for what you might win," said Gaikowski.
Dakota Cash is played only in South Dakota. Prior to Gaikowski's win, the jackpot for Dakota Cash was last hit on Nov. 18, 2009. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1: 324,632. The jackpot starts again at $20,000 for the next drawing on Wed., March 24, 2010.
