(PIERRE) - Mike Hanlon of Sioux Falls today claimed his $200,000 Powerball prize for the April 10, 2010 drawing at the Sioux Falls Lottery office.
Hanlon matched five of five numbers on the white balls but not the red Powerball number on a Quick Pick ticket purchased at HyVee on 26th and Marion Road in Sioux Falls. It is the third time this year the $200,000 second prize has been won in South Dakota. He is the first individual South Dakota winner to win $200,000 this year; the other two times the prize was won by groups of 35 or more.
Hanlon, who works for Minnehaha County, says he usually purchases Powerball tickets when the jackpot gets about $100 million. Finding out he was holding a winning ticket for the April 10, 2010 drawing wasn't as big a surprise as learning just how much he'd won.
"I ran the ticket through the scanner (at the store) and the message said it was a winner and to go to the lottery office. I had never seen that before. I told a couple friends about it and nobody was sure if that meant I had won $100 or $1,000 or what. So I figured I'd won at least $1,000 or so," he said.
When Hanlon told his girlfriend that he had a winning ticket for an unknown amount, they went on-line to the Lottery website so see if there had been a large winner in South Dakota. After finally determining that there had been, they checked his numbers again.
"She started reading them off and I just answered yes, yes, yes, yes," Hanlon said. "When I found out that I'd won $200,000, I just started calling everybody on my phone - old friends from high school, brothers, sisters, everybody!"
Although he has no immediate plans for what to do with his winnings, Hanlon said he'll continue to buy Powerball tickets when the jackpot gets high enough.
"It feels amazing to be the one in 5,138,133 to win it. It could happen to you, too," he said.
Powerball is played in 41 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The odds of winning the $200,000 prize are 1:5,138,133. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1:195,249,054.
