(Pierre) – Beginning Dec. 17, 2010, Mega Millions players in South Dakota who add the Megaplier option to their ticket could pocket a $1 million prize.
The legislative Rules Review Committee today approved administrative rules that would make a ticket that matches all five white-ball numbers but not the red Mega Ball worth $1 million if the player purchased the Megaplier option for an additional dollar per play.
Currently, the Megaplier feature increases non-jackpot prizes by two, three or four times their regular amount. Mega Millions offers a second prize of $250,000 so the Megaplier would need to be “4” for the individual to win $1 million with a “Match 5” ticket. With the change next month, the ticket would automatically be worth $1 million, regardless of what Megaplier number is chosen.
The South Dakota Lottery began offering the Mega Millions game on May 16, 2010. The game’s starting jackpot is $12 million and drawings are held Tuesdays and Fridays. Mega Millions is played in 41 states and the District of Columbia.
