Some lucky player or players could start 2011 $330 million dollars richer. The Mega Millions jackpot has been raised to $330 million for the Jan. 4, 2011 drawing. That puts the cash option at $208.3 million.
The jackpot was to have been $290 million for Tuesday's drawing but the group that oversees the game made the decision to raise the jackpot to $330 million today. The last time the Mega Millions jackpot was at $300 million or higher was in August of 2007. The $314.3 million dollar jackpot was won in Indiana on Aug. 25th of that year.
Mega Millions tickets cost $1 per play without the Megaplier and $2 per play if the Megaplier is added. The Megaplier allows players to increase their non-jackpot prizes by 2, 3 or 4 times depending upon what Megaplier number is drawn. Players who purchase the Megaplier option and match all five white ball numbers but not the yellow Mega Ball automatically win $1 million.
Mega Millions tickets can be purchased at all lotto retailers in South Dakota until 9:00 p.m. CT/8:00 p.m. MT the night of the drawing. The odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are 1:175,711,536. The game is played in 41 states and the District of Columbia.
