An Easter visit to his mother in Indiana proved to be a lucky move for William Swanson II of Houston, TX. While in Merrillville, IN, Swanson purchased a Powerball ticket for the April 23, 2011 drawing...and hit the jackpot.
Swanson, a geoscientist in Texas, and his 81-year-old mother, Marilyn, always purchase Powerball tickets whenever he comes home to Indiana to visit. The winning Quick Pick ticket was purchased at a Meijer's department store in Merrillville; the store will receive a $100,000 bonus for selling the ticket.
Swanson had the option of taking $74 million paid out as an annuity over 30 years or a single lump sum payment. He took the one-time payment, pocketing about $27 million after taxes. As for what he'll do with his jackpot winnings, Swanson plans to move his mother to Houston and take some vacations with his 13-year-old son.
Swanson's April 23, 2011 win was the second Powerball jackpot win in Indiana in the month of April. The $221.7 million Powerball jackpot on April 6, 2011 was hit by two Clarksville, IN men.
