(Pierre) - A Powerball ticket worth $1,000,000 in last night’s drawing was sold in Sioux Falls.
The ticket matched the five white balls, but not the red Powerball, to win the game’s second prize of $200,000. The lucky player had added the Power Play feature for an extra dollar. The prize multiplier was 5, making the ticket worth $1 million.
The winning numbers for the Saturday, October 8 drawing were 26, 31, 35, 46, 50 and the Powerball was 28. The Power Play multiplier was 5.
Norman Lingle, the executive director of the Lottery said, "It’s great to have such a big winner so soon after the game changed. The million dollar ticket is the 6th largest lotto prize won in South Dakota."
On August 28, two numbers were added to the pool of white balls in the game. The changes increased the odds of winning the jackpot from 1:120 million to 1:146 million, but also included doubling the second and third tier prizes to $200,000 and $10,000 respectively.
Five players have also already won the new $10,000 third prize, including one in last night’s drawing.
Lingle said the ticket holder should sign the back of the ticket immediately, put it in a safe place, and contact the Lottery at 605-773-5770 to make arrangements to claim the prize. Lottery offices are closed Monday for the holiday. The winner has 180 days to claim the prize.
The Power Play feature allows players to multiply their prizes, except the jackpot, by two to five times. Players can add the prize multiplier for an additional $1 at the time of purchase. The Power Play number from 2-5 is randomly chosen with a prize wheel during each Powerball drawing.
Because no one correctly matched all six numbers in Saturday's drawing the jackpot for Wednesday’s drawing grows to an estimated $240 million, making it the 5th largest in the game’s history.
"A big jackpot is exciting. We want people to have fun, but ask them to play responsibly. It only takes one ticket to win," Lingle said.
The odds of winning the jackpot are 1:146,107,962. The odds of winning the game’s second prize are 1:3,563,609. Powerball is played in 27 states, the District of Columbia and the US Virgin Islands.
