(PIERRE) – When it comes to playing the lottery, Mike Swier of Hartford has a routine. Every Tuesday and Friday, he purchases a ticket for each of South Dakota’s five lotto games and for an extra dollar, adds the Power Play option to his Powerball ticket. He nearly always buys his tickets at the same place, too – Kings Liquor Mart on North Cliff Avenue in Sioux Falls.
On October 15, 2011, Swier’s routine paid off in a big way when he won the $100,406 Dakota Cash jackpot. He claimed his prize on October 17, 2011 at the Sioux Falls Lottery office.
Swier’s discovery that he’d won the big one was almost as routine as his playing methods; it happened during a family trip to the grocery store.
“We’d stopped at HyVee after dinner on Sunday to pick up some groceries and my son, Travis, and I went to the counter to check my tickets. For once it (the ticket self-checker) didn’t tell me ‘not a winner’ so I checked it again and got the same message to take it in to the Lottery. I had the clerk check it, too and got the same response,” Swier said.
After signing the back of the ticket and high-fiving his son on the win, they proceeded to find his wife, Kathy, and daughter, Nikki, in the store and shared the news. Swier, who is employed as a maintenance worker at a Sioux Falls company, says the shock of winning hasn’t really sunk in yet and he doesn’t have any immediate ideas for what to do with his jackpot winnings.
”I’ll probably find out I have a lot more friends now than I did yesterday,” he joked. But he does plan to keep following his same routine when it comes to purchasing tickets and offers some words of wisdom to other would-be jackpot winners: “You can’t win unless you play.”
The odds of winning the Dakota Cash jackpot are 1:324,632. Kings Liquor Mart in Sioux Falls will receive a $5,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
Dakota Cash is played and won only in South Dakota. The last Dakota Cash jackpot hit prior to Swier’s win was for $68,071on a ticket sold in Spearfish for the August 17, 2011 drawing. That jackpot is currently unclaimed and will become invalid if not claimed by Feb. 13, 2012. The jackpot currently sits at $20,000 for the next drawing on Wednesday, October 19, 2011.
