(PIERRE, SD) – The South Dakota Lottery is giving players 50,000 reasons to celebrate the agency’s 25th anniversary this year. In recognition of the milestone, the Lottery is offering a pair of anniversary scratch tickets with top prizes ranging from $5,000 to $50,000.
The $5 25th Anniversary Commemorative ticket gives players the chance to win up to 15 times and up to $50,000 on a single ticket. The game was designed specifically for the anniversary celebration. A $1 Match 3 game has also been launched in honor of the event. Lottery Sales Director Joe Willingham says long-time players may remember this one.
“Match 3 was the first scratch ticket we sold 25 years ago,” said Willingham, who has been with the Lottery since operations began Sept. 30, 1987. “On the first day of ticket sales, we sold a little over $1 million in tickets. We thought in honor of the anniversary it would be fun to give players a fresh look at the ticket that started it all.”
Like the original game, the 25th Anniversary Edition Match 3 costs $1 and has a top prize of $5,000. Willingham explains that when the Lottery began, only one game was sold at a time. Currently, lottery retailers have 12 to 16 games for sale at the same time. The special anniversary scratch tickets can be purchased now at all lottery retailers.
The Lottery’s 25th anniversary celebration also includes prize giveaways with registration beginning in the next few weeks, an anniversary-themed booth at the South Dakota State Fair later this month, and a formal observance at a South Dakota Lottery Commission meeting to be held adjacent to the actual September 30 anniversary date.
