Jolly Good Fun

'Twas the night before Christmas when all through the house, not a creature was scratching, not even a mouse. The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, in hopes they'd be stuffed with scratch tickets to share. When what to my wondering eyes should appear, but Saint Nick with three new holiday scratch tickets for this year. Then mamma in her kerchief and I in my cap, each grabbed a ticket for a fun holiday scratch. We laughed and we cheered and made silver snow fall, as we scratched away, scratched away, scratched away all. Then Santa exclaimed as he left with a dash... "Jolly Good Fun to all, and to all a good scratch!"

Give. Scratch. Cheer. $1, $2 & $5 Tickets are here.

Jolly Fun Facts...about Christmas cookies, best and worst gifts EVER

Whether shaped like snowmen, slathered in icing or left round and crispy, sugar cookies are a holiday staple. A totally unscientific poll of South Dakota Lottery employees showed 62% of them picking sugar cookies as their favorite Christmas cookie. They've had a long time to grow in popularity; according to historians, sugar cookies as we know them were first made by German settlers in Pennsylvania in the 1700's. But they're not for everyone. Other favorite holiday cookies making it on our list were Mexican wedding cake cookies, ginger snaps or gingerbread, chocolate truffles, snow balls, chocolate chip and almond bark pretzels (which are technically not a cookie but if that employee is willing to bring some on holiday treat day, we won't argue). Looking for holiday cookie recipes that think outside the box? The Washington Post's Holiday Cookie Generator has over 300 recipes, some using ingredients you've probably never thought of. Happy Holiday Baking!

New babies. An Easy Bake oven. Snowmobile. A Casio keyboard. Jewelry. A Redskins football helmet lamp. Marriage proposal. When we asked our Lottery staff what was the best Christmas gift they ever received, the answers were as varied as our staff themselves. But they all agreed that the best gift you can get for the holidays is to spend that time with family and friends. So, what's making the list for most people this Christmas? USA Today lists the top 5 most popular gifts on Amazon as: 1) Cards Against Humanity; 2) Amazon Echo and Echo DOT; 3) Amazon Fire Stick TV with Alexa; 4) Fujifilm Instax Instant Film Camera; and 5) Sony PlayStation 4 Slim. Whatever's on YOUR list this year, we hope you find it under the tree Christmas morning!

Over half of our Lottery staff reported never having received a bad Christmas gift (all gifts are appreciated, they say) but of those who did have a disappointing Christmas morning, socks and underwear, a paint by number set and rocks (how do you wrap THOSE?) made the list of worst gifts ever. Since one man's trash is another man's treasure, we went to Brainjet to see what made their list of the "15 Worst Gifts Ever". Among the entries: Ugly Christmas sweaters, a glow in the dark toilet seat, belly button brush, socks and a calendar...for the year that's ending. Like Grandma always said: it's the thought that counts.
