Please Gift Responsibly

The South Dakota Lottery reminds players that scratch tickets aren’t suitable gifts for minors.

The South Dakota Lottery is proud to participate in the National Council on Problem Gambling’s (NCPG) annual Gift Responsibly Campaign this holiday season. Lotteries throughout North America and around the world are partnering to raise awareness about the risks of underage lottery use.

“It’s important for our players to know the risks associated with underage lottery use. The Gift Responsibly campaign is an important staple of our responsible gambling efforts.” Lottery Executive Director Norm Lingle said.

Throughout December, the Lottery will provide educational materials to players and retailers as part of the Gift Responsibly campaign. These materials will include a newsletter, social media posts, emails, and more.

“The potential long-term risks associated with underage gambling exposure cannot be understated,” said Keith Whyte, NCPG Executive Director. “We applaud the South Dakota Lottery for their commitment to raising awareness about the risks of youth gambling and for working to educate the community that lottery tickets are never appropriate gifts for children.”

The Lottery’s resp

onsible gambling efforts extend throughout the year. It has a dedicated webpage with tips on responsible gambling and warning signs of problem gambling.

The South Dakota Lottery has received certification from the NCPG and the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries (NASPL) for its responsible gambling program. Each year, the lottery provides up to $214,000 to the South Dakota Department of Social Services to help fund problem gambling services.
